Kempo Martial Arts Academy has been using one of the most exciting and innovative programs you and your child (under 18) will ever experience in the area of personal responsibility education.
Our Leadership Program is based on S.T.A.R.- Success Through Accepting Responsibility or Stop, Think, Act, and Review- which was developed by the Jefferson Center for Education located in Pasadena, California.
The S.T.A.R. curriculum is currently used by over 5,000 schools and 50,000 classrooms across
the country and has reached nearly two million students.
The Jefferson Center focuses on the teaching of common values that
cut across ethnic, cultural, and religious lines.
These values include: honesty, respect, responsibility, integrity, courage,
tolerance, justice, self-confidence, and politeness.
In addition to accessing the S.T.A.R. program, Kempo Martial Arts Academy
incorporates materials from the Tiger Woods' Start Something Program (TM).
At our school, our mission is to instill in students these very values using the martial arts.
We believe this to be an on-going process and not something to be achieved in a month or a
year but rather over a lifetime of education and effort.
We have chosen the Leadership Program because it is the perfect complement to our philosophy.
The Leadership Program will provide an on-going, systematic method of
teaching the core values on which our program is based.
Our Leadership Program is designed to teach students to: Accept the consequences of their actions.
Use the Stop, Think, Act, and Review decision-making model to solve problems and resolve conflicts.
Develop and improve self-confidence, self-esteem, and positive attitudes.
Set and achieve realistic goals.
Accept that attendance at class, punctuality, and reliability are part of being personally responsible.
Build onto leadership qualities and the responsibilities of leaders.
Each month there is a theme and activity to perform in relation to the program.
The students' monthly activity is recorded and easily accessible so they can observe their own progress.
Results of Independent Studies "Studies done by two Pittsburgh, PA foundations, the
Scaife Foundation and the Vera I. Heinz Foundation, showed dramatic decreases in disciplinary
problems during an average month after the introduction of S.T.A.R. in an academic school setting.
For example: fighting decreased 25% and tardiness 40%."
